The amount of rotation of each sprocket wheel gear depends on the rotation speed of the driving sprockets, the number of teeth of the driving sprockets and the number of teeth of the driven sprockets. The sprocket must be inspected once a month for wear and if the teeth are worn down or are broken they should be replaced. The sprockets and the chain must be lubricated with chain lube such as bell ray.

Rack and pinion gears are another type of Spur gears. Actually a Rack is defined as a straight bar that has teeth which are cut straight and across. Actually, The Rack is considered as a spur gear that is unrolled and laid flat. Pinion is the normal gear. A rack and pinion is a very special example of spur type of gearing. The rack-and-pinion has been found to be specially useful in conversion of rotary motion into linear and vice versa. Rotating a pinion produces a linear motion of the rack. Alternately moving a rack causes rotation in the pinion.

Working of a Rack and Pinion Gear
To describe the working of a rack and pinion gears system is not that simple. In fact the rack and pinion gear system looks a bit different. However you will be amazed to know that it is composed of two gears. The pinion is what you call a normal round gear while rack’s shape is mostly straighter or flat. It is the teeth of the rack which meshes with the gear’s teeth of the pinion. Basically there are three variations of Rack and Pinion Gears. They are helical teeth modular pitch, straight teeth metric pitch and straight teeth modular pitch. Rack and pinion gear variations are also made available in various qualities.

The pinion — or, more accurately, the pinion shaft — is another long metal rod, also grooved, but without a flat side. The grooves along the pinion shaft are horizontal, not vertical, as in the case of the steering rack. The pinion shaft comes into the rack at an angle of about ninety degrees and is held in place by a collar, so that the two, rack and pinion, come together in a kind of magical union. The pinion shaft is connected at the hip to the steering column. Thus, when you crank your steering wheel to the right, for example, the pinion shaft turns the opposite direction (clockwise).

A worm gear is used when a high speed reduction ratio is required between crossed axis shafts which do not intersect. A basic helical gear or helical gears can be used but the power which can be transmitted is much lesser. A worm drive consists of a large diameter worm wheel with a worm screw meshing with teeth on the edges of the worm wheel. The worm is similar to a screw and the worm wheel is similar to a sliced section of a nut. As the worm is rotated the wormwheel is caused to rotate due to the screw like structure of the worm. The size of the worm gearset is generally based on the in between distance between the worm and the wormwheel. Worm and worm gears provide an perfect answer for power transmission applications which have the requirement of high-ratio speed reduction in a limited space using right angle (90°), non-intersecting shafts. When perfectly applied, worms and worm gears provide the smoothest, soundless form of gearing. Because the efficiency and performance of a worm gear drive depends on the lead angle and number of starts on the worm – and because high efficiency is always a goal, the ratio should be kept as less as possible. To run properly, worms and worm gears used together must have the same diametrical pitch and threads.

Worm gearing is essentially a special form of helical gearing in which the teeth have line contact and the axes of the driving and driven shafts are mostly at right angles and do not intersect. The distinction between helical gearing may be explained as follows : if the number of threads or teeth is such that no one thread makes a complete turn, the gear is called a helical gear. Of on the other hand, a thread makes a complete turn, the result is a worm and the mating material is called worm wheel.

Spur gears are the most simple form of Gears available. They the most commonly used and easily available gears in the market. Spur Gears are found generally in the form of a cylinder or disk. These gears are used for varying the force and speed of a rotating axle. They have a straight teeth and are mounted on parallel shafts. Mostly the tooth form is based on the involute curve. Bevel and hypoid gears may be used to transmit power between shafts at practically any angle and speed. The particular type of gearing best suited for specific job, however depends on the mounting and the operating conditions
Types of Bevel Gears:

Bevel gears are conical gears, that is ,gears in the shape of cones, and are used to connect shafts having intersecting axes. Hypoid gears are similar in general form to bevel but operate on axes that are offset, straight-tooth type or of the curved toot type. The latter type includes spiral bevels, Zerol bevels, and hypoid bevels. The following is a brief description of the distinguishing characteristics of the different types of bevel gears.

Straight bevel gears:

The teeth of this most commonly used type of bevel gear are straight but their sides are tapered so that they would intersect the axis at a common point called pitch cone apex if extended inward. The face cone elements of most straight bevel gears, however are now made parallel to the root cone elements of mating gear to obtain uniform clearance along the length of the point inside the pitch cone. Straight bevel gears are easiest to calculate and are economical to produce.

Straight bevel gear teeth may be generated for full length contact or for localized contact. The latter are slightly convex in length wide direction so that some adjustment of the gears during assembly is possible and small displacements due to load reflections can occur without undesirable load concentration o the ends of the teeth. This slight lengthwise rounding of the tooth sides need not be computed in the design but is taken care of automatically in the cutting operation on the newer types of bevel gears
